How Do I Get My Music on Spotify Editorial Playlists?

Hey everyone!

I've been releasing music independently for about a year now and I keep hearing about Spotify playlist placement being a game changer for streams and exposure.

I submitted my last single through Spotify for Artists before the release date, but I never heard anything back and it didn't land on any editorial playlists.

Is the pitching process really that competitive? Are there any tips for writing a strong pitch? Should I also be targeting algorithmic playlists or third party curators instead?

Any advice from artists who have successfully landed placements would be hugely appreciated.

Any advice from artists who have successfully navigated playlist placement would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
thanks in advance for any help

Yes—Spotify editorial pitching is extremely competitive.

In general, you’re competing with a huge volume of daily submissions, and there’s no guarantee of placement even if you submit correctly through Spotify for Artists. Editorial teams are also looking at broader signals beyond the pitch itself.

A few practical points that usually matter:
  • Submitting early helps (at least 7+ days before release is important)
  • The pitch should be clear, concise, and focus on genre, mood, and story rather than hype
  • Strong metadata (genre tagging, mood, instrumentation) helps with internal categorization
  • Editorial playlists are curated, so timing, trend fit, and consistency as an artist matter a lot
In parallel, most independent artists also focus on:
  • Algorithmic playlists (like Release Radar and Discover Weekly), which respond to listener behavior
  • Third-party curators, which can help build early traction
  • Direct audience growth, since engagement signals often influence algorithmic pickup
So yes, editorial playlists are very competitive, but they’re only one part of the system. Many artists see better long-term results by combining editorial pitching with algorithmic momentum and external promotion rather than relying on a single submission.
