What are music scales, and how are they used?

I have been paying a little attention to music production. One term that keeps coming up is music scale. Unfortunately, I don't know what that means yet. It's not that I can't Google it but I want to hear how those into music production defines it and what it's all about.

There was a time I asked a friend about this because he was into music production. His explanation was that music scales are series of notes played in orders and in a specific pattern, used to create melodies and harmonies.
