They had a unique sound. in fact, they were one of the most interesting bands of the 80s. Well, they had a sort of jingle jangle guitar thing going, kind of like with REM. Anyway, Morrisey's lyrics are a bit whiny and bratish (not British, lol), but he pulls it off well.
 
I have been following The Smiths Rock band for more than 15 years and I have been in love with most of their songs. You're right about them having a jingle jangle guitar thing with their songs because you can pick it out easily. One of their songs which is my favourite would be Handsome Devil.
