The Chivarreto boxing tournament takes place annually
on Good Friday in Chivarreto, Guatemala. The tournament
is part of Semana Santa, or Holy Week.

How it works

• The tournament is open to anyone, and winners receive trophies.
• The fights are bare-knuckled, and no boxing gloves are used.
• Four referees are present to enforce rules and protect fighters.
• Knockouts are declared when a contestant hits the floor or quits.
• The bouts take place in a ring near the plaza so that residents and tourists can watch.

History

The tournaments began as punishment for criminals, who had to fight each other. Since 1900, the tournaments have been open to anyone.

Chivarreto is a village in San Francisco El Alto, Totonicapan, Guatemala. It's located in the mountains north of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala's second largest city.
