I think simple lyrics are important too. The topics can vary a lot but there aren't many pop songs with lyrics that have a deeper meaning...when listening to pop nobody expects a lyrical genius of some sorts.
Also the topic shouldn't be too complicated or heavy. Songs about love, friendship, sex and just daily aspects of life are the most featured ones, while texts about war, political topics and criticism of society really aren't common and successful in the genre.

I think that depends on one's definition and opinion of "deep lyrics". I really respect Taylor Swift but i don't think she's a lyrical genius as a lot of people say. But that's just my opinion and it's completely ok to have another one.
