    Obviously, Alternative has been mainstream since the 90s (but really, if we count bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, since the 80s), but I think Alternative describes a sound rather than one's relationship to the mainstream. It's really just music that shares some bloodline with Punk/Post-Punk.
